Semester Program

Summer Program

The IES Abroad Melbourne program is organized by the Australian Centre of the University of Melbourne, which is known as a leader in research and interdisciplinary teaching and has received national and international recognition for its work in developing Australian Studies. 

Program Overview

The IES Abroad Melbourne program is designed to introduce you to the historical, cultural, and political life of Australia through enrollment in two of the following courses:

  • Politics Society and Identity in Australia (required), which includes a three-day field trip to sites such as the historic town of Ballarat, a major national park, or the Great Ocean Road
  • Cross-cultural Currents: Indigenous and Multicultural Issues in Australia, which includes a trip to the Outback
  • Australian Internship Program
  • Australia's Controversies , Conflicts, and Debates , which includes a four-day field trip to Canberra and Sydney

IES Sydney, Australia

Sydney, the site of Australia’s first European settlement, is the country’s largest city and home to a fifth of the Australian population with 4 million residents. As the commercial and business center of Australia, Sydney is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan city with a population that is youthful and diverse. Sydney has the best of big-city culture alongside some of Australia’s top-ranked universities and arguably the most stunning beaches and landscape on earth. As a fully-integrated student, you can shape your own unique course of study. Culturally, there is something for everyone—from world-class opera to water sports—there are few limits to exploring all the city has to offer.

CIEE Perth, Australia

Because of its location on the Indian Ocean rim and just a few hours flight from major destinations in Asia, Perth is a vibrant multicultural city with an outward-looking persona. The CIEE Study Center at Murdoch University reflects this and appeals strongly to students with an interest in cross-cultural studies, including interest in Australia's indigenous population and culture. It is also recommended for science students, particularly those in the fields of biological science, marine biology, ecology, and the environment. The program has an added attraction for students who enjoy the outdoors, and who are interested in internship opportunities.

Program Overview

  • On-site CIEE Resident Director provides students with full-time local academic and personal support and arranges local and regional excursions, volunteer opportunities, and cultural events
  • Full range of academic offerings with renowned programs in media studies and field-based sciences, including sustainable development and marine science
  • Cultural and educational activities such as bushwalking, surfing lessons, Aussie Rules football matches, and visits to museums, theaters, and art galleries
  • Excursions including a weekend sailing trip on a three-mast tall ship and trips to places such as Pilbara

IES Christchurch, New Zealand

Christchurch, one of the oldest and most European cities in New Zealand, is an ideal study abroad destination for students who want to experience the adventurous and relaxed pace of New Zealand life. Located on the coast of the stunning South Island, Christchurch, known as the Garden City, is perfectly situated to explore the rugged Southern Alps, the fjords, and the miles of endless coastline. In this laidback city, you can spend a Sunday afternoon punting on the Avon River, exploring the beautiful beaches, or enjoying the café-lined streets. Resources such as the Arts Centre and events like the International Film Festival give you access to a range of stimulating cultural activities. Beyond the city limits, students don’t have to travel far to find a vast array of outdoor activities such as skiing, climbing, rafting, and mountain biking. Indeed, Christchurch’s location — on the coast, only one and a half hours from the mountains — means that it’s possible to surf and ski in the same day!
