IES Vienna, Austria

Semester Program

Founded in 1950, the IES Vienna Center is located in the Palais Corbelli, an elegant 18th-century palace in the heart of Vienna, just minutes from many of the museums, theaters, and other major cultural attractions that have bestowed international fame on the city. A fascinating city of 1.8 million people, Vienna has preserved the best of its rich history and culture, while opening itself up to the contemporary challenges it faces both as the capital of a member state of the European Union and as the most important gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. Vienna is situated on the Danube River at the edge of the majestic Austrian Alps and has been an important crossroads since the time of the Romans. It is a charming city as well as a cosmopolitan metropolis of timeless fascination, and its unparalleled opera houses, museums, and theaters are as famous today as they were a century ago.

Program Overview

  • Take advantage of the extensive IES curriculum in both English and German, with a special emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Enroll in courses at the esteemed University of Vienna and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
  • Gain international work experience and unique cultural exposure through internships in Business, Education, and Public Service. 
  • Live in private apartments or apartments shared with local residents; or live with Austrian and international students in residence halls.
  • Take exciting field trips to Budapest, Krakow, and Prague in the fall; and to Berlin, Dresden and Weimar in the spring. Additional trips to Styria and Wachau and a special ski weekend in the Austrian Alps are also offered.
  • Meet local Viennese students and practice speaking German through a special Language Partner program.

Summer Program

The IES Vienna Summer Music Program is specially designed for Music Performance majors, but is also well suited for Music minors and other talented instrumentalists and vocalists.

Program Overview

  • Take advantage of a Music History and Performance curriculum designed around a special topic or period.
  • Develop performance skills and expand repertoire through participation in the Music Performance Workshop (audition required).
  • Enhance your performance through private music instruction.
  • Attend the rehearsals of major ensembles in Vienna.
  • Hear guest speakers from prestigious Viennese music institutions share advice and insight into what it means to be a professional musician
  • Improve your German through beginning and intermediate level German language courses.
  • Live in private apartments or apartments shared with local residents.
  • Participate in exciting field study trips to sites central to the history of music in Austria.

IES European Union Program

Semester Program

The IES European Union Program offers outstanding opportunities for Economics, Political Science, International Relations, and International Business majors. You will study the development and activities of the EU in a breathtaking location, with field trips to sites important to the affairs and interests of the European Union and its plans for the future. Courses emphasize the historical and institutional development of the EU, its internal policies, issues of culture and multiculturalism, and its relations with outside nations. A major component of the EU program is field study, and because of its prime location in the center of Europe, Freiburg affords easy access to the major EU offices of governance and to capitals and other important cities in Western and Eastern Europe.

Program Overview

  • Take part in a Model European Union simulation and put newfound knowledge into practice while deliberating issues currently before the European Council. · Take English-taught courses in a variety of subject areas.
  • Study the German language at any level. · Participate in exciting field study trips to Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Frankfurt, Geneva, Krakow, Luxembourg, Paris, Prague, Riga, Strasbourg, and Tallinn.
  • Visit EU institutions such as the European Parliament and the United Nations, and meet with leading academics, NGO and parliamentary representatives, and members of the business community.
  • Gain international work experience and unique cultural exposure through post-program internships in Freiburg and Brussels.
  • Benefit from housing with German and international students in co-ed suites in student residence halls.

Summer Program

The IES European Union Summer Program offers you the opportunity for intensive study of the European Union and its relationships with Turkey, the Balkans, and other EU accession candidates in Southeast Europe. The program is especially well-suited for students with an interest in Business, Cultural Studies, Economics, International Relations, and Political Science.

Program Overview

  • Take courses that relate to the most current and crucial issues facing contemporary Europe and the European Union, with a focus on Turkey and the Balkans. 
  • Gain or refresh basic German and Turkish language skills through language & culture study during orientation.
  • Live with German and international students in co-ed student residence halls.
  • Participate in a unique 10-day field study trip that explores the cultural, political, and economic centers of modern Turkey and the Balkans (Bulgaria or Croatia).

IES Oxford, England

Fall or Full Year Program

Oxford is a quintessential English college town which offers study abroad students a vibrant intellectual and social life. Situated on the River Thames just 60 miles outside London, Oxford is a city of stone buildings and classic cloistered colleges which are integrated into the fabric of the town center. The city has an international feel because of the faculty and students from around the world who are attracted to live and work here. The IES Abroad Oxford Direct Enrollment Program provides a unique academic experience for competitive and highly motivated students. At St. Catherine's College, your studies are guided and shaped by your own intellectual interests and require a significant amount of self-motivation.   • Directly enroll in courses at the St. Catherine’s College, the youngest and largest college of Oxford University, for a fall 
    semester or academic year

  • Participate in a 3-week, 3-credit pre-semester tutorial at the IES Abroad Center in London, in preparation for your upcoming academic experience in Oxford (Fall Only students)

    IES Nantes, France

    "Nantes is perhaps the only city other than Paris where I have the impression that something great may happen to me," wrote the French poet, André Breton. After only a few weeks in Nantes, you will begin to realize that "great things" await you as well. The IES Nantes offers the opportunity to integrate fully into French society and function completely in French due to the program’s focus on full immersion and the fact that there are few anglophones in Nantes. You will select from IES language courses in grammar, conversation, and phonetics, and from area studies courses in Art History, Economics, History, Literature, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Theater. Enroll in 15-19 credit hours per semester through a combination of: IES courses, taught in French by native French faculty, University courses, and internships.

    Program Overview

    • French Immersion Program. Enhance language learning with all courses taught in French by highly-qualified local professors and a strict ‘ French Only’ language policy at the IES Center.
    • Homestays. Gain valuable linguistic and cultural insight into French life by living in homestays.
    • Local University Courses. Enroll at local universities and institutions.
    • Cultural Immersion. Experience a high level of cultural immersion as a participant in the only permanent American study abroad program in Nantes.

    The rich traditions of Paris and its environment afford ample opportunities for students to enhance their classroom experience by visiting local museums, attending plays and concerts, and touring one of the many ethnically diverse neighborhoods of Paris. The IES Paris French Studies Center is located in a neighborhood that is known for its market streets, artisan workshops, lively cafes, restaurants, and theaters. The French Studies Program is committed to encouraging your integration into the French community and to developing your understanding of the French language and people. The Business & International Affairs program gives students with little or no French language ability the unique opportunity to study Business and International Affairs in English, while experiencing the incredible richness of Parisian life.

    Founded in 1963, the IES Freiburg program offers students with previous German language experience the opportunity to integrate themselves fully into German university student life and improve their German language skills in the charming yet cosmopolitan city of Freiburg. Organized in cooperation with the distinguished Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, the program offers rigorous undergraduate study in German Language and Literature, Business, Economics, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The IES Freiburg Program also offers you the opportunity to gain international work experience and unique cultural exposure through participation in an internships at area businesses, environmental advocacy groups, government agencies, hospitals, NGOs, political parties, schools, and theaters.

    IES Dublin, Ireland

    Semester Program

    Modern Dublin is defining the new image of Ireland with its thriving economy, social programs, and art scene. Yet even in the midst of change, Dublin preserves its history, evident in its architecture and in its political, religious, and social institutions. Dublin plays many roles for Ireland, as the Republic's political capital, the home of past and present writers of international stature, and the center of the island's phenomenal economic growth. Dublin also affords easy access to the beauties of the countryside, seashore, and mountains. You can experience Dublin's energy first-hand through four distinct IES program options: Irish General Studies Program, Direct Enrollment in local Dublin universities, Peace and Conflict Studies Program, and Theater Performance Program.

    The IES Dublin Center is ideally situated to take advantage of the many summer activities outdoors on St. Stephen’s Green, nearby Grafton Street, and at Trinity College. The Center occupies a renovated red-brick Victorian building that was originally a post office and now enjoys landmark status.

    The IES Dublin Summer Program offers students three distinct six-credit enrollment options:

    • Enroll in two courses from a wide variety of offerings that focus on class and contemporary Dublin.

    Semester Program

    This program is designed for students who have an interest in Russia. The program can accommodate different levels of language proficiency, especially beginning and intermediate Russian language students.

    Program Overview

    • Learn about Russia and improve your Russian language proficiency with intensive training
    • Participate in optional volunteer projects organized through a well-developed network of contacts that facilitate integration into Russian society
    • Live in the beautiful 300-year old city of St. Petersburg
    • Class-related field trips in and around St.Petersburg, such as Pushkin and Dostoyevsky in St.Petersburg, The Siege of Leningrad, The Russian Museum, The Menshikov Palace, St.Petersburg Cathedrals, Petrodvorets, Pavlovsk, and Yusopovskii Palace
    • Excursions to Moscow, Novgorod, and Tallinn, Estonia (fall) or the Pskov region (spring) · Independent travel week

    Summer Program

    This program is designed for students with 4 semesters of college-level Russian who wish to improve their proficiency with the Russian language. This is an intensive program that focuses on all language skills.

    Program Overview

    • Cultural program including local excursions and field trips
    • The longest-running study abroad program in Russia
    • Beautiful St.Petersburg, three hundred years of history in one city
    • Optional volunteer projects
    • Homestay with a Russian family
    • Weekly excursions such as an overnight trip to Moscow to sites of cultural importance such as The Hermitage and the City of Pushkin

  • Study abroad students usually apply to one or sometimes two academic departments and then select courses from these and/or other departments. Because of the high academic rigor of this program, a 3.85 GPA (out of 4.0) is required to participate.
