Kansai Gaidai, Japan

The TCU exchange with Kansai Gaidai offers a unique opportunity for students to enroll in the Asian Studies Program at an international university in the Osaka / Kyoto region. Students take Japanese language classes at their level and area studies courses in English. Students may live in homestays or dorms on campus.

Program Overview

  • A range of courses taught in English, including Japanese culture, Business, Economics, History, Political Science, Art, Religion, society, Literature, Cinema, and Psychology.
  • Spoken Japanese and written Japanese language courses. 
  • Housing in either a homestay or dormitory
  • TCU is limited to one student per year on this exchange, so apply early.
  • Priority is given to students who have taken Japanese language with Prof. Keitges.

Aoyama University, Japan

The TCU exchange with Aoyama offers a unique opportunity for students to enroll in the Foreign Studies Program at an international university in Tokyo.

Program Overview

  • A range of courses taught in English and Japanese. Students with minimal Japanese skills may take Art and Calligraphy courses.
  • Housing in dorms, apartments, or guesthouses.
  •  – There are a few student dorms for Japanese & international students an hour commute from campus. Aoyama has special contracts with these dorms and can help with the arrangements.
  • TCU is limited to one student per year on this exchange, so apply early.
  • Priority is given to students who have taken Japanese language at TCU with Professor Keitges.

The TCU exchange with Nanyang Technological Institute offers a unique opportunity for students to direclty enroll in thisEnglish-speaking university in southeast Asia.  Students are eligible to take classes from any of the disciplines, including Accountancy & Business, Art, Design & Media, Communication Studies, Education, Engineering, Humanities, Science, and Sports Science.  Students live in dorms on campus.

IES Beijing, China

Semester Program

The IES Beijing program offers students a choice - a strong Chinese language program or the Contemporary Issues in China Program. Both IES Beijing programs are located on the campus of the Beijing Foreign Studies University (Beijing Waiguoyu Daxue). Popularly known as Bei Wai, this university is one of Beijing's most highly regarded academic institutions.

Program Overview

  • Participate in an intensive language program with small classes and individual tutorials equivalent to one year of Chinese taught in a semester.
  • Take fascinating area studies courses taught in English by Chinese and Western scholars.
  • Gain valuable cultural exposure and international work experience through for-credit internships.
  • Experience first-hand living and learning in the historic capital of China. Live with a Chinese roommate in a campus residence hall or homestays with Chinese families.
  • Visit parts of China rarely visited by tourists such as the Silk Road and Yunnan or Guangxi province on IES designed and led Field trips

CIEE Shanghai, China

Semester Program

This program is designed for students with no Chinese language background and those who have studied Chinese for several semesters. The program offers Chinese language training at both standard and intensive levels coupled with coursework, taught in English, in global studies, economics, international relations, and area studies.

Program Overview

  • Comprehensive Mandarin language program for beginner to intermediate students, including accelerated language option for beginner students.
  • Global studies program with English-language courses in international affairs, Chinese politics, economics, history, and society.
  • Language and Culture Practicum to bridge language acquisition and experiential learning in Shanghai and during the week-long field trip into rural China. 
  • Live with a Chinese roommate or a Chinese family.
  • Cultural and educational activities such as visits to an acrobatics show a river cruise, and a Chinese/CIEE talent show.
  • Excursions to places of interest around Shanghai such as Hangzhou or Suzhou.
  • Week-long excursion to Yunnan or Sichuan.
  • Language practice options such as Peer language tutors, target language meals, language clinics.

IES Delhi, India

IES Delhi offers a rigorous academic program that focuses on contemporary India in its cultural and historical context. The program offers a broad range of courses in the humanities and Social Sciences where students can also pursue their academic interests by taking courses at a local university in Delhi.

Program Overview

  • Take IES courses that emphasize contemporary India and the Indian cultural tradition. Study Hindi language at beginning and intermediate levels.
  • Enroll in two courses at a local university.
  • Gain valuable cultural exposure and work experience in community-based placements with local NGOs and service organizations.
  • Experience the rich culture of Delhi, the seat of the modern Indian government and the historic capital of the Mogul empire.
  • Live in a Residence Hall with an Indian resident advisor or with an Indian family in a Homestay .
  • Enjoy exciting field trips to historic and cultural sites such as Varanasi and Kerala.

CIEE Khon Kaen, Thailand

Are you hoping to work in some capacity that will benefit society and the environment? Are you thinking about joining the Peace Corps or another community-based volunteer program upon graduation? Then this program is for you. The CIEE Study Center in Khon Kaen helps you to understand the complexities concerning development and globalization issues, and the role you play as global citizens. You'll learn about development and globalization from both an academic and a grassroots community level and its overall effects on a developing nation.

Program Overview

  • Learn about a broad range of issues — effects of dams and mining, urban slums, people living with HIV/AIDS, organic farming, human rights, social movements, and NGOs— from a grassroots perspective in a developing country.
  • Opportunities for cultural integration through the community stays and translated exchanges throughout the Northeast—as well as Thai student roommates and peer tutors.
  • Learn to better understand your role in the world.
  • Authentic exchange with villagers, NGOs, and others working for social change through site visits and hands-on field work.
