Seville Pre-departure Information

The following information is for the TCU in Seville semester-long program.  For TCU's summer program in Seville, click here.

RESOURCES AND MATERIALS

Upon acceptance, you will be sent a copy of the pre-departure handbook.  Please read it carefully.

You can also learn more about Spain through the following sources:

AT PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION

  • Complete and return all necessary forms to the Center for International Studies (Rickel Building, Suite 246), including the Indemnity Forms.
  • Shortly after orientation, your course choices will be sent to the university in Seville and will try to be accommodated, but enrollment in specific courses is not guaranteed.  Remember that your course choices should all be approved on the Study Abroad Credit Approval Form.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS

  • All students must have a valid passport.  Applications are available at the post office or at http://travel.state.gov/.  Make copies or scans of your passport.
  • Apply for a student visa 2 months before you leave. The Consulate requires students to apply in person.  You will need the following paperwork:
    • 2 completed application forms, in capital letters, in blue or black ink.
    • 2 recent passport-sized photos (staple one to each application)
    • Passport (be sure to sign it)
    • Photocopy of your health insurance card
    • Photocopy of your driver's license
    • Letter from TCU Health Center indicating you are in good physical and mental health
    • Cash or money order (no checks!) made payable to Consulate General of Spain for $100
    • Acceptance letter from TCU
    • USPS Express Mail Envelope with $16.50 stamp to return passport to you
  • You must submit your passport with your visa application.  The visa is stamped inside your passport, and can 6 – 8 weeks for the Consulate to process the visas.  Therefore, you should not plan to travel outside the U.S. during the 2 months prior to your study abroad departure.

BY DECEMBER 15

  • Enroll in International SOS.
  • Submit your flight itinerary to the Center for Intl. Studies. Some discount travel agencies include:
  • If you live in TCU campus housing, inform Residential Services that you will be studying abroad.
  • Consider purchasing the International Student Identity Card, available for purchase at the TCU ID Center, or the Trip Plus card
  • If you will need academic accommodations while abroad, contact the Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities at TCU.   TCU cannot guarantee academic accommodations, but will assist as needed. All documentation must be completed prior to departure.
  • Forward your TCU mail home.
  • Forward your TCU email to any other account you may use while abroad.
  • Make copies of bank cards and credit cards to keep in a secure location.  Make an emergency plan for lost or stolen cards.  Consider giving parents power of attorney to act on your behalf.
  • TCU recommends purchasing travel insurance and personal property insurance.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

  • Read health and safety information your program handbook, the State Dept: www.state.gov, and the CDC: www.cdc.gov.  Request prescriptions for your time away.
  • See a doctor and dentist for general check-ups and to discuss travel-related health issues.
  • Each student must show proof of health insurance before traveling to Seville. Verify your insurance coverage for out-of-country claims prior to departure.

ARRIVAL AND ON-SITE INFORMATION

  • Upon arrival in Seville, go to Hotel Zenit, http://hotelzenitsevilla.zenithoteles.com/(Pages del Corro 90).
  • TCU will organize an afternoon coffee or evening snack on the day you arrive. On Saturday, there will be orientation meetings and a walking tour. Your host families will pick you up at the hotel on Sunday.
  • Monday is the campus tour and Spanish language placement test. Tuesday is the academic orientation at the university; you will receive your course schedule & results of your placement test.  Courses start on Wednesday.
  • Because you are not enrolled in TCU classes, you will not be on the TCU system. Please be understanding if snags arise when trying to change email password, register for classes, etc. Please contact the study abroad office for advice if necessary.
  • Your classes will not transfer back to TCU until 8 – 10 weeks after the semester ends. This may appear to impact your financial aid (aid will be reinstated after grades are posted).
